This weekend (7-8 March) the Icelandic Championship will be played in Reykjavik. Saturday the singles, Sunday the pairs. In this article, we’ll look forward to the singles with our favourites and outsiders for the title. Read more.

Men
At the men, we have two clear favourites for the title: Matthías Örn Friðriksson and Vitor Charrua.

Friðriksson won earlier this year the Icelandic Premier League for the first time, with a 6-3 win over Vitor Charrua in the final. Friðriksson also reached three IPS Ranking finals, of which he won 2 of them. In all the finals Charrua was the opponent. In addition, ‘The Eagle’ managed to throw an average of 98 during a match of a ranking tournament for the Meistari Meistaranna. Friðriksson has never won the Icelandic Championship before, will this be his year?

Charrua was the runner-up of this years Icelandic Premier League. During the Reykjavik International Games Charrua lost in the quarterfinals against
Kristján Þorsteinsson 5-3. Charrua reached the first four finals of the IPS Rankings this year. He won 2 of these finals, one against Friðriksson and one against Ingimarsson. The other two finals were lost against Friðriksson. Last year ‘The Grenade’ won for the first time the Icelandic Championship in Reykjavik, can he retain his title this year?

Outsiders for the title are Þröstur Ingimarsson, Páll Árni Pétursson, Halligrimur Egilsson, Pétur Rúðrik Guðmundsson, Sigurður Aðalsteinsson, Þorgeir Guðmundsson and Alex Máni Pétursson. Ingimarsson reached begin february an IPS Ranking final, while Pétursson won the first edition of the Reykjavik International Games. Egilsson, P.Guðmundsson, Aðalsteinsson and Þ.Guðmundsson all are former winners and can come far Saturday 7 March. The youngster Pétursson is one of the talented players in Iceland and reach last year the final of the BDO ranked Iceland Open!

Women
At the women, there is only one favourite for the title and that is, of course, triple Icelandic Champion Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir. She seems unbeatable this season. She won all the first 4 IPS Rankings and also won the Reykjavik International Games tournament this year. That means she has a win rate of 100%. Who can beat her at the moment?

The players who can make it difficult for her are Petrea Kr. Friðriksdóttir, María Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir, Diljá Tara Helgadóttir and Hrefna Sævarsdóttir. Friðriksdóttir (five-times) and Jóhannesdóttir (three-times) are multiple Icelandic Champions and know how to win this tournament. Jóhannesdóttir was also the runner-up of the Reykjavik International Games. Helgadóttir was last years finalist and reached the two finals of the first four IPS Rankings. Sævarsdóttir reached the other two IPS Ranking finals and looks also in great form.
